REPORTS TO: Superintendent
JOB GOAL: To assist the Superintendent in all aspects of addressing the educational
requirements of students requiring special education instruction
and/or related services and those students who receive services and/or
accommodations under Section 504 Plan.
SALARY RANGE: The salary range for this position is from $90,000-$110,000 yearly and is commensurate with experience.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate and oversee the District’s special education program in compliance with state and federal regulations and District requirements.
- Evaluates the District’s special education and special service programs on an ongoing basis to ensure effective and efficient identification and service for students with special needs.
- Encourages positive communication between parents of special needs and/or at risk students and the school district.
- Implements effective child find activities and referral procedures to identify students with special needs and/or at risk.
- Implements appropriate systems related to the identification, referral and evaluation of students for special education program.
- Ensures Individual Education Plan development and implementation in accordance with federal law and state regulations.
- Assists general education teachers in understanding the accommodating of students with special needs in the general education classroom.
- Oversees the maintenance of special education records in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Oversees the maintenance and submission of ISBE necessary student data information via Harrisburg Project’s iePoint data system.
- Serves as liaison between the School District and the Kankakee Area Special Education Cooperative and private facilities.
- Represents the District’s Department of Special Education at interagency, school and community meetings and functions as requested by the Superintendent.
- Assumes responsibility for understanding and interpreting state and federal statutes, rules and other laws pertaining to special education programs.
- Keeps the Superintendent and administrative staff informed of developments and issues in special education programs.
- Prepares and files appropriate grants and claims for special education program.
- Conducts periodic evaluation of the District’s special education program and recommends adjustments to better meet the needs of the District’s students.
- Assists the administration in determining professional development needs and organizing professional development programming as it relates to special education programming.
- Assists the Superintendent in formulating budget projections related to the special education program.
- Supervises and oversees the evaluation of District special education personnel.
- Provides a recommendation to the Superintendent regarding hiring, remediation and employment termination of District special education personnel.
- Oversees the development and implementation of District Section 504 plans.
- Arrange for transportation for students with special needs.
- Conduct in-service workshops for special education staff.
- Work with classroom teachers to establish a year-long plan for parent involvement/parent education workshops.
- Collaborate with other agencies to provide parent education training.
- Attend IAASE and other special education conferences as necessary.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality of information about students and personnel.
- Performs such other duties and tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be delegated by the Board of Education or assigned by the Superintendent.
